We are excited to announce the evolution of our youth programs: The Cycling Co. DIRT SQUAD Youth Mountain Bike Team is open to riders aged 11-18 years of age (or racing age categories U13-U19).
This mountain bike focused program will involve group training, skills development and ongoing coaching for competitive riders (or riders wishing to become competitive).
Riders will be encouraged to try XC or Enduro racing. The team will attend selected Vancouver Island events. (events TBD)
The Dirt Squad is a registered team with Cycling BC and coached by Adam Walker, BC Provincial Team Coach and former Canada Cup XC Champion.
For those of you who might be new to the world of cycling, this affiliation with Cycling BC means a few, very significant things:
- First, it means that it is a completely separate entity from the actual company, The Cycling Co.
- Because we are a team, it also means that we are able to ride more places, so we may venture to other locations on occasion.
- Because we are insured under Cycling BC’s insurance rather than corporate insurance, we can teach more advanced skills. This is ONLY possible if riders in the program carry a Cycling BC “Race” or “Ride” license.
Your child’s SAFETY and FUN are our two most important objectives. We also strive to ensure that your young rider improves their skills and has the opportunity to excel through world class coaching.
Therefore, all of our coaches and instructors are National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) trained or Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association (PMBIA) certified. We want to make absolutely sure that we have the best coaches and instructors available. This means that we will make certain that they are treated as professionals and well-compensated for their time.
SPRING 2018 PROGRAM
The Spring DIRT SQUAD program will consist of a 12-week after school program, running on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30 from March 13 until May 29 at Bear Mountain. The Dirt Squad Youth program is open to riders ages 11-18.
HOW TO APPLY TO THE DIRT SQUAD 2018 YOUTH DEVELOPMENT TEAM
YOU’VE GOTTA WANT IT.
Rock Star Riders wishing to be selected may apply for the limited spots and will be chosen based on attitude as much as ability. We are looking for riders who display leadership qualities, who are motivated, who are responsible, and who show up for practice ready to ride, work hard, have fun, and treat each other with respect.
This is going to be a very fun, very cool program as it evolves. We want riders to become empowered individuals who are leaders amongst their peers. We hope that these riders are so much more than just mountain bikers. We truly want to develop the whole person as well as create a great athlete.
For this reason, we ask that riders write us a letter and tell us why they want to be a part of this movement.
- How does riding make you feel?
- How has riding changed your life?
- What do you hope to do on your bike?
These can be tough questions for a young rider, but we want to know. We want to know because we want them to think about it. We want them to begin to understand the importance of setting goals. We want them to dream big and to believe that anything is possible.
LET’S RIDE, LET’S RACE!
The other objective of the DIRT SQUAD is to provide competitive opportunities. Racing might not ultimately be for every rider, but for a lot of us, it can be a heck of a lot of fun! The mountain biking community is an incredibly supportive scene where riders encourage each other and form life-long friendships.
Kids play soccer, hockey, and many other sports in a fun, competitive environment. Cycling can be the same! We aim to embrace and focus this competitive energy in a positive environment.
Sport can teach us many valuable lessons. It is not just about podium placings or medals. Sport teaches us so much about ourselves and how we affect the world around us.
As such, we will have a presence at many Island Cup cross country and enduro events and riders will be encouraged to try at least one race.
Riders will also be entitled to discounts of 15% off all other Cycling Co. programs (Spring Break and Summer Camps). In addition, riders will have the option to purchase DIRT SQUAD team clothing and Cycling Co. clothing at discounted rates. (Cycling BC requires riders to wear team clothing at races).
Costs for the program:
An annual Dirt Squad membership fee of $100.00 per calendar year,
A quarterly program fee of $300
*The quarterly fee only applies if the rider registers in that quarter’s programs.
**These fees go directly to cover coaching costs.
Please note: THIS IS A NON-PROFIT PROGRAM.
THIS PROGRAM IS FLEXIBLE
We know that now, more than ever, kids and families have a lot going on and we support the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) “Sport For Life” model. We want youth to participate in several sports and stay active. For this reason, we have created a seasonal program that allows kids to be flexible.
For example, a rider could register for the spring session, skip summer, and register for fall for a price of $100+$300+$300.
Or, a rider could do just one, three-month program per year and be charged $100+$300.
For older youth riders who may be highly competitive, we have monthly coaching programs available. Please contact us to discuss.
