Coach Adam Walker

Coach Adam Walker - MTB Coach on Vancouver Island

Adam Walker is a professional mountain bike coach and founder of The Cycling Co.

Not only has Adam coached athletes to World Cup wins and a World Championship, as a masters athlete himself, he is passionate about helping all riders achieve their biggest goals, like completing BC Bike Race.

Adam’s Coaching Philosophy

Adam’s coaching philosophy is built on an athlete-centered, complete approach:

“Every athlete brings a unique mix of background, physiology, experience, and mindset.

To me, effective coaching means meeting the athlete where they are and creating a unique plan, shaping the training process to reflect their individual needs.”

  • Riding has to be fun — passion drives performance.
  • “There are a lot of ways to bake a cake.” – Athlete development and performance can be achieved multiple ways
  • Process leads to progress. Be patient. Good things come to those who show up.
  • It’s not about how much you can train, but how much your body can absorb.
  • Skill Development = Free Speed on the trail
  • The hours off the bike are just as important as the hours on the bike.
  • True performance is built on a foundation of health.
  • Communication and collaboration are the cornerstone of an effective coach–athlete relationship.
  • Training plans are only a fraction of what coaching truly is — true coaching also develops the mental, emotional, tactical, and equipment elements that lead to success.
  • Subjective data — how an athlete feels and what their body is telling them — is more important than the device on their wrist. Numbers matter, but only if they’re used and interpreted the right way.

This approach allows each athlete — whether a world champion or a masters rider chasing a big goal — to reach their full potential.

Rider Testimonials

Working with Coach Adam has played a huge part in my growth as an athlete over the past few years. Having the opportunity to collaborate on a training plan with someone who not only motivates me, but holds me accountable to my goals, has created consistency in my training habits and confidence in my capabilities.

Most importantly, a training plan that is personalized and adaptable allows me to have a sport/life balance which keeps me excited to train. Adam can see the big picture when I can’t. He encourages me to keep pushing and seize opportunities when I am apprehensive and maintains the most genuine, unwavering, positivity towards his athletes that allows them to feel supported no matter what.

Having Adam in my corner, whether it’s bringing me a finish line Pepsi, or answering my calls when competing on the other side of the world, eliminates any doubts that I haven’t prepared enough because he is a constant reminder of how far I’ve come and inspires me to keep on exceeding even my own expectations.

Adam was the perfect choice to help me with my BCBR preparation. Because of the knowledge he has and the tools he is using, Adam was able to adapt my training to my specific goals, schedule and preferences. He is as agile on the technical aspect of riding as the mental aspect of racing.

Adam taught me about nutrition before/during/after riding, the logic behind the training process, what my data is saying and what my body is saying.

Working with Adam was an exercise of faith in many aspects of training: when/what/how much to eat while riding, manage different heart beat zones and when to rest.

And as important as coaching is, Adam is a great human being; cool, fun, a great communicator and knows his stuff!

I can only speak highly of Adam! It was the best investment I made in my athletic journey!

I decided to sign up for the 2026 BCBR in May 2025 as a “bucket list” goal for myself. Knowing that a seven-stage endurance event was not only going to be physically demanding, but also strategically, psychologically and emotionally challenging, I signed up with Coach Adam from The Cycling Co. to be my personal coach.

My near-daily touch points with Coach Adam helped me get to the starting line of Stage 1 in the best physical shape in my life following his daily workout plans, weekly Team Shred zoom calls, and my personal 1-on-1 monthly Zoom sessions. That was my goal and while I successfully accomplished that objective, I ended up getting SO MUCH MORE. The value received that I did not expect was the deep knowledge I gained (not just the “what” but the “why”) on nutrition, mental focus, goal setting, and on finding the most “durable” version of myself.

Coach Adam and Coach Mariska also created a genuine sense of community with their group of athletes in our weekly Team Shred meetings that carried over to real in-person connections at BCBR. Having my “Club Shred” community and my coaches within the larger BCBR event not only provided me with a sense of belonging, but it was crucial to helping me get across the finish line of Stage 7.

There are a lot of coaches and resources that can “crunch the numbers” and get your body physically prepared to take on something like the BCBR, but Coach Adam is different. He is exceptional not only in his knowledge of the math and science behind training athletes, but also for his compassion, lived experience, and full commitment to helping his athletes find their success.

Thank you, Coach Adam and Coach Mariska!

I worked with Adam Walker at The Cycling Co for about seven months getting ready for the BC Bike Race (2026). I was basically a recreational cyclist riding a couple of times a week, and my goal was to get through BCBR comfortably and enjoy the experience. Adam put together a great training plan and was very flexible when work, travel, illness, or life got in the way.

He was always responsive and easy to reach, and did a good job explaining the workouts and why I was doing them. He also helped with a lot more than just training, including nutrition, equipment, recovery, logistics, and race mindset. One thing that really stuck with me was his advice to stay present during the race, focus on what was in front of me, and enjoy the experience rather than worrying about results.

Another thing I really liked was the weekly group call where you could ask questions and get to know some of the other riders preparing for the race. It added a sense of camaraderie that you don’t always get with online coaching. Adam also offered one or two in-person training camps. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend, but they looked like they would have been incredibly useful, and if I were doing it again I would definitely try to make one of them.

The training definitely worked. I got through all seven days and was actually surprised that I felt like I was getting stronger toward the end of the race. Adam and The Cycling Co also had a tent and meeting place for us during the race, which was really nice to have.

I would definitely recommend Adam, especially to anyone considering BC Bike Race or another mountain bike stage race. Having someone take care of the training plan and provide accountability takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process. You just have to do the training.

Adam is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, easy to work with, and I had a great experience!

I can’t recommend The Cycling Co and Adam Walker enough! Adam truly helped me prepare for the 2025 BC Bike Race eMtb version with a tailored training plan that fit perfectly into my busy work schedule and personal life. His expertise in creating custom training plans helped me build the confidence and strength I needed for one of the biggest weeks I’ve ever spent on my mountain bike.

Not only is Adam an excellent coach, but I’m also grateful that our friendship has continued both on and off the bike. If you’re looking for someone who genuinely cares about your progress and well-being, look no further than Adam at The Cycling Co!

Adam was my coach when I transitioned from racing locally in the SW US to racing on the Pro 1-2 circuit. That was over 20 years ago while he was also racing full time. I still have those hand written workouts, but it was his patience, support and ability to teach me how and when to push myself that made the difference. Adam helped me to discover the confidence needed to race with the best of them. He was there for me again a few years later when I transitioned to mountain bike racing. I know his coaching knowledge has only continued to expand, but I can assure you he’s been a great coach from the very beginning! Molly Renner, Tucson AZ

I learned more at Adam’s weekend clinic than I had in the last four years with various cycling groups and coaches. The skills I acquired in the space of two days have made me much more confident and comfortable on my bike and on the road. Adam’s ability to communicate and explain are equaled by his patience (willingness to answer my many questions), sense of humour, and his obvious cycling passion and experience. The small group size of Adam’s clinics means each participant gets the assistance they need – which was awesome! Thank you so much, Adam!

Trained with Adam Walker back in 2014. I learned so much and became a much better and stronger cyclist. I would recommend his training to anybody that wants to get better.
